2013 Frostburg State University Spring Fest

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, Frostburg State University held its annual Spring Fest in the Upper Quad to celebrate the end of the school year.  The theme was "The Getaway" and a tropical ambiance was created to match the theme.

Various Frostburg State University clubs and associations were represented such as The National Society of Black Engineers.

Spring Fest is a traditional festival with all the trimmings - food, games, prizes, but minus the mechanical rides.  Inflatable rides were provided instead.  At least 100 current and former students, teachers, and community residents attended.

Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Omega Psi Phi fraternity performed at the end of the festival.  The crowd got larger by time they stepped.  In addition to my enjoying watching step shows, Greek organizations are an important part of Black culture.  So, I felt it was important to take their pictures.  Since I like to see how performers interact with each other after their shows, I took a lot of pictures of them.  What I saw was interesting.

I didn't arrive at the Quad before it started (what professional photographers are encouraged to do), but I arrived very early and stayed until the end; I stayed four or five hours.

The weather was gorgeous - sunny, there was not a cloud in sight.  It became very hot, actually.  That is unusual for the first week in May.

I waited in anticipation for this event for about a month because I heard some good things about the Spring Fest.  I wanted a large portfolio by the end of the school year and eventually take pictures of large-scale (community) in the Washington, D.C.-area - where I'm from.  The Spring Fest was good preparation.  I've noticed many event pictures are the basic group pictures or the same certain activity is taken.  I rarely see action.  So, I focused on capturing those kinds of shots (through out the year and today).

The Spring Fest provided activities for all ages to enjoy.

The Omega Psi Phi's ("The Q's" or "Q-Dogs") step show performance was the main attraction.  I wanted to know if they are really like family when they're not on stage.  These brothers are.  They laughed, wrestled, hugged, and the older generation was there to show support.

It was so crowded that I had to stand on my toes to take pictures and shoot videos.  I was able to capture the Q's in a huddle being led in singing one of their songsI really like that shot.

At the end of SpringFest, the party really began.  An impromptu dance to George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" - the Omega Psi Phi's theme song - occurred.  The crowd danced  to "Doing the Butt", a popular song featured in "School Daze", Spike Lee's 1988 movie about Greek life on college campuses, among other issues.

Without the set-up and take-down crew, there'd be no events to attend.  So, I like to capture pre- and post-event setups and cleanups.

After the Spring Fest ended, three Q's walk off into the sunset.

I enjoyed every minute of the Spring Fest.
